When it comes to smoothie ingredients, Greek Yogurt is a good choice if you want to add some protein to your smoothie, and improve the texture and mouth feel.
Greek Yogurt is strained more than regular yogurt, which reduces the amount of liquid whey, lactose, and sugar. It ends up about the same amount of calories by raising the protein level, and reducing the amount of sugar. You get about 13 grams of protein in a six ounce cup.
If you’ve ever eaten Greek Yogurt, you know it has that really great tangy taste to it, and is typically thicker than regular yogurt. I often eat it completely plain.
My favorite brands that are available at my local grocery store in Dallas are Chobani and Greek Gods. I typically use the regular fat version since I am not worried about calories, but the low-fat and non-fat versions taste about the same inside a smoothie.
This is a very simple and tasty recipe that was one of the first smoothies I ever made.
It doesn’t “taste healthy” like some of my more advanced recipes that I often make now.
When you drink smoothies on a regular basis and start to feel the benefits of adding a lot of fruits and vegetables to your diet, you quickly acquire the taste for making them more and more nutrient dense with more and more fruits and vegetables added in.
But those who are new to smoothies can get turned off if you jump straight into the deep end, so this recipe is perfect for them, or for someone who just wants something tasty.
Superfood Greek Yogurt Smoothie Recipe:
1/2 cup of frozen blueberries
1 teaspoon of honey
4 heaping tablespoons of plain Greek yogurt (any brand, regular, low-fat or non-fat)
1 cup of water
Blend until smooth, and enjoy. Makes 2 servings.
What makes it a superfood smoothie? Blueberries!
Blueberries make the top of almost every list of common superfoods, because they are full of antioxidants and fiber, and are also high in potassium, vitamin C and other phytonutrients.
Did you like this smoothie? Did you modify the recipe? Do you have a different Greek yogurt smoothie recipe you like better? (Hopefully with some type of superfood ingredient!) Please leave a comment and share your feedback with everyone.
